The band Philmont has been around for a couple years and has released several EPs independently, but Oh Snap is their first major label release on Forefront Records. While there might not be much here that separates them from any other Christian pop rock group out there on the market, what does give them an edge is the energy they display.
Oh Snap opens with "I Can't Stand To Fall," a song about how the singer doesn't want to fall if God isn't going to be there to pick him up again afterwards, and "The Difference," another youthful, energetic anthem. As you give the EP a listen, one thing you notice is the solidness of the vocals, both lead and background, and surprising chord changes that give the songs a uniqueness about them. The EP continues into some slower songs, including "Another Name" and "Photosynthetic," two more highlights on the album.
While the lyrics of these songs show the band's obvious love for God, it also is the weakest point on the EP. Full of common cliches, the lyrics don't go very deep, but if that's not that much of an issue, don't let it stop you from getting this EP. Though there's plenty of room for maturity, Philmont is definitely a young act to keep your eye on in the coming years.
