While working on CAVES, NEEDTOBREATHE recorded a song that deviated significantly from the sound of the album they were making at the time. Rather than forcing the song to fit on the album or forgoing its release altogether, they packaged it as a standalone single. In June 2022, "Talk of the Town" entered the world for the public to hear.

The track has its own unique feel that does not draw great comparisons to other songs in the band's discography. Perhaps it combines the more alternative moments of H A R D L O V E with the rock sound of The Reckoning, though even that fails to capture what "Talk of the Town" offers. While different from their typical output, the catchy tune works out well for the band and even makes this reviewer hope for more songs like this one in the future. The lyrics discuss the empty life that comes from seeking to impress others. Rinehart sings, "I saw you faking a smile, take a lap in your gown / Loving yourself when there's no one around / Are you the talk of the town now? / And when you're sitting alone, take a look at you now / You see your reflection, is it making you proud?" Not only does that person experience emptiness, but the external result is also vain and unsustainable: "Sooner or later, we all know that plastic castles all fall down." The alt rocker serves as a reminder that we cannot receive lasting fulfillment and worth from what people think of us; true satisfaction comes only from God and following His calling for our lives.

For those who may have missed this single upon its initial release, take four minutes to check out and enjoy a deeper but rewarding cut from the band's catalog. "Talk of the Town" easily has become one of this reviewer's most returned-to songs from the band in their post-Bo Rinehart era.
