Prior to 2006, I knew who mewithoutYou was, and I was only kind of into it. Then I heard "C Minor" and thought there might be more to them than what I had believed previously. I took a chance and bought Brother, Sister and listened to it repeatedly on a road trip I had taken shortly thereafter. I remember very clearly driving through rural Kentucky in the middle of autumn, listening to "A Glass Can Only Spill What It Contains" and being in such awe. What a beautiful album. Captivating from start to finish, each melody, each chord, every lyric had purpose and depth and wonder. It's an incredible album that not only came at the right time in my life, but stayed with me ever since.

It took me a long time to "get" mewithoutYou's brand of post-hardcore. I first heard Brother, Sister around the time Pale Horses was released and, try as I might, I couldn't wrap my head around Aaron's spoken-word-like vocal delivery and cryptic, metaphor-laden lyrics. Fast forward three years later, to the beginning of this year, to be precise, and I decided to give it another chance to see if I could finally connect the dots to this strange band's mystique. As this year comes to a close, not only have I come to understand and even enjoy this record, I've come to treasure it as one of my favourite records of all-time, and one of Christian music's most undeniable modern classics. Aaron's philosophical musings found a true beginning on this record, and conclusions he came to are being explored even today ("I do not exist, only You exist"), and it laid the musical foundation for everything that has since followed. It's what turned a good band into a remarkable one, and years down the road, I'm sure this will still be speaking to believers about the nature of humanity and his relationship with God.
