"Where were you when I was…?" Everyone who owned the physical copy of Emery’s sophomore album, The Question, has asked themselves these questions: Where were you when I was playing with fire? Where were you when I was listening to Freddie Mercury? The Question took the raw ingredients of the band’s debut, The Weak's End, and churned out something big, beautiful, and bold. This album deals tactfully with intense issues — ranging from premarital sex to criminal activity — without losing the band’s iconic three-vocalist dynamic, pitting Devin’s and Toby’s hilariously-similar singing voices (often overlapping with different lyrics and melodies) against Josh’s and Toby’s screams. The resulting album solidified what Emery is still known for, meriting a 10th Anniversary tour in 2015, even if some of the elements were later refined on albums like …In Shallow Seas We Sail. The opening four tracks here are four of the greatest and most distinctive songs of Christian rock history (an accolade that some fans may extend to the first eight tracks). While the album does falter a bit in its final third, it’s still an impressive work of art that will never be forgotten, even as Emery continues to release noteworthy albums.

What can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said? The Question is the anthem for a bunch of young adults in the mid-to-late aughts who were just discovering love and heartache. It’s so easy to get yourself caught up in the soaring melodies as you (figuratively) allow your heart to be torn out, asking the culprit "Where were you when I was so cold I could see my breath? Where were you when I was the weakest? Where were you when I was in a lose, lose situation?" and probably not getting an answer. This is a life-changing album, the lyrics and melodies of which are now and forever etched on my heart and soul.
