Day 10: Cortney Warner's Top 20 Favorite Relient K Songs

Here is a list of my top 20 personal favorite Relient K songs. This list is obviously biased to my own taste and opinion, but I cannot wait to share some of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands, and the thoughts and memories attached to them. Here we go!

20. All the bonus/hidden tracks!
They are a Relient K staple and always a fun treat.

19. Deathbed (2007)
Truly an epic opus. Everything on this song is perfect-from the poignant yet silly lyrics to the beautiful narrative. Plus the cameo by Jon Foreman is the icing on the cake.

18. I Celebrate The Day (2003)
This is an instant Christmas (and even year-round) classic. It should be added to the list of traditional Christmas songs.

17. Jefferson Aero Plane (2003)
Another dynamic song. One of the most interesting songs Relient K has written. It's simultaneously relatable and open to interpretation, yet very specific to whatever Matt's situation was when he wrote it.

16. Sahara (2009)
One of the many brilliant tracks on the near-flawless Forget and Not Slow Down. On the album, this one stands out as a rocker, and has some great guest vocals. I remember all of my musician friends trying to learn this song on guitar when it first came out.

15. In Love With The 80's (Pink Tux To The Prom) (2003)
Pure fun and nostalgia for anyone who was (or wasn't) alive in the 80's, and it's a great tie-in to Relient K's former work, where they would almost exclusively use pop culture references in their songs, to where they were when Two Lefts Don't Make a Right, But Three Do came out.

14. I So Hate Consequences (2004)
With a catchy hook and a message that hits close to home, this is one of the best tracks on Mmhmm (in my opinion... as with this entire list). Relient K's music not only has great depth lyrically, but musically as well, and “I So Hate Consequences” is a prime example of that. Not everyone can pull off background screams while rocking out on the piano.

13. Savannah (2009)
One of the few happier songs on Forget and Not Slow Down, and still one of my favorites of theirs to this day. It has charming lyrics accompanied by a beautiful guitar, and “pops” on an album that's mostly somber and pensive.

12. Forward Motion (2003)
I feel like, regardless of what age or where you are in life, this song will always be relatable. I felt it when I was 10 and first heard this song, and I still feel it at 23. Great melodies and a catchy piano outro make for a 12th spot on my top 20 list.

11. Therapy (2009)
Relatable and heart-wrenching lyrics within a piano-driven song. Need I say more? A staple on any Relient K playlist I make.

10. Pressing On (2001)
We've made it to the top 10! This is one of the first songs I ever heard by Relient K. I was in a middle school worship band at the church I went to at the time, and we would sometimes cover Relient K. This was one of the songs we covered, and I was hooked.

9. Mood Rings (2003)
Brilliant. Just purely brilliant. No matter how goofy you may find the concept, it's still a genius idea and song. It's hard to imagine that Matt Thiessen was the same age as I am when he wrote this and the entire Two Lefts album.

8. Getting Into You (2003)
A classic, yet unconventional, worship song. Simple and heartfelt, this song gets to the point. I also have fond memories trying to learn it on guitar when I was a teen.

7. For The Moment I Feel Faint (2001)
Another great song that highlights the band's faith. Still a popular one that my friends and I will play together when we're playing music.

6. Forget And Not Slow Down (2009)
I could spend my life just trying to sift through what I could've done better, but what good do “what if's” do?” One of my all-time favorite lyrics ever written. Enough said.

5. More Than Useless (2004)
Sonically dynamic, lyrically relatable as ever. As with most of Relient K's work, it was as relatable to me at 11 as it is at 23. Upon further inspection, this song is also surprisingly on the dark side, which I appreciate. I also learned that this is Matt Thiessen's favorite track off of Mmhmm.

4. Must Have Done Something Right (2007)
The quintessential relationship/wedding song. Happy, fun, catchy, and witty, it's all you could want in a bubbly Relient K song. A fine example of when Relient K does poppy music, they do it better than most other artists who would consider pop their wheelhouse.

3. Sadie Hawkins Dance (2001)
The VERY first Relient K song I ever heard! This one holds a special place in my heart, as not only is it the first Relient K song I heard, but I also covered it in the middle school band I was in. Fun, silly, and still a hit at parties, this is one of Relient K's classics.

2. Who I Am Hates Who I've Been (2004)
Mmhmm was a big record for me growing up, as it was for many people around my age who love Relient K. “Who I Am” hits home for me in many ways, and I still crank it up whenever it comes on my playlist.

1. Be My Escape (2004)
I know this one is probably cliche and predictable, but can you blame me? Have you heard this song? Arguably Relient K's biggest hit to date, and one of their best songs. This song, along with most of the Mmhmm record, played a role in me becoming a Christian, so this song will forever be engraved in my life. THE MELODIES! This song is so well-written, that literally any version of it is absolutely beautiful. Even the instrumental covers of it are gorgeous. This song still has the ability to make me tear up just by listening to it.

We made it! I had a blast making this list, and I hope you enjoyed reading it! I owe a lot to Relient K, if it wasn't for them I wouldn't be where I am at now, in more ways than one. Relient K will always have a big and special place in my heart, and I hope they continue to make quality music that will meet anyone right where they're at in life.

I also owe a lot to JFH and John, both have impacted my life in so many wonderful ways, and I am forever thankful. Happy 20th, JFH!
