Echo the Light is a new three-piece, rock-based worship band who has just released its debut single, "Send Me." The song describes the band's desire to go along with God's call to spread the Gospel wherever He sends them. Though her vocals aren't quite as strong, vocalist Jessie Schat bears a passing resemblance to singer/songwriter Sarah Kelly and her bold, audience-commanding pipes, which is great for this kind of anthemic, driving rock sound meant to encourage its listeners. While it's certainly no hard rock song with chugging guitars or harsh vocals, its blend of rock and contemporary reminds me of the more exciting and promising CCM acts from back in the day, like Todd Agnew or even some early Jeremy Camp. Unfortunately, the lyrics are a bit repetitive and occasionally cliche; though definitely well-intentioned, phrases like "you have my 'yes'" tend to elicit more eye-rolls than solidarity from me. However, the song's message of listening to God's leading and making disciples of all nations is an important one. If you feel that calling as well, let "Send Me" be a song to encourage you to pursue it, and remind you that "there's so many souls that still need to know You."

Echo The Light is an indie worship group featuring Jessie Schat (vocals and keys), Chris Schat (keys, bass, and guitars), and Derek Mehl (drums and percussion). The group has a history of leading worship, and set out to foster a worship-minded atmosphere to expose people to God's love and presence. Their first single is "Send Me" and was released to streaming platforms last month. I wouldn't call the new track a worship song per se, but it's certainly inspirational in nature. Schat sings about her calling, asks to be sent by God to fulfill her calling, and then talks about the things she's able to do through Christ. It's a song of thanksgiving for what God has blessed her with and willingness to step out, but it's also a little too "I/me" focused to be seen as a true worship song. In the chorus Jessie sings, "Send me, God. Send me over land and over sea. Send me, God. You have my 'yes;' You have my 'yes.'" Musically, the track starts off softer and more atmospheric with a simple clean lead guitar line intermittently playing over pads. The song slowly builds with some additional single strums on the first chorus, and the complete band coming in verse two. Fully overdriven guitars hit on the second chorus to accentuate the plea to be sent and used by God. "Send Me" is a nice first single from this new band of worship focused musicians. It's an especially powerful and relatable song for missionaries, or those seeking to be missionaries, around the world. Jesus Freak Hideout (Scott Fryberger): First the obligatory question: how did you come up with Echo The Light, and what's the story of coming together as a band?

Christopher Schat: It's a long story. Essentially, we'd taken some years away from music, and when God called us back to it, we didn't feel right returning under the same name (more details following question two). This was a new vision, new conviction, and so we went with a new name. The name came to us during a prayer walk after we'd spent weeks mulling over and spitting out other names. We'd come to a stop in a random courtyard at the university campus we live by, and we felt a need to pause, and wait. So we did. Then, suddenly, all these old-timey street lamps came on at once, and there was a shout from somewhere off that echoed around the courtyard. I said, "How about Echo The Light?" And it clicked. The more we thought on it, the more it aligned with what we believed God was designing in our lives.

JFH (Scott): Your band bio claims that you have years of experience in music. Were any of you in other bands before outside of church worship bands?

Christopher: Our band currently consists of three members (this recounting does not include church or school-based bands/choir). Derek (drummer) was in a Christian alt rock group called Crimson Thread during college. When that ended, he was already brother-in-law to Chris (guitarist/songwriter), who had just ended with another group called Requience with lead singer, Jessie (singer/songwriter). We three formed a group called Walking Relic, that lasted over a decade, but eventually ended. Derek and Chris teamed up for Schat And The Skeleton Trees for a couple years afterwards. In 2024, the three of us got back together with a new mission called Echo The Light.

JFH (Scott): What is your plan for putting new music out there? Do you have an album in the works?

Christopher: We are currently working on an album, yes. It SHOULD be out summer 2027. Right now our goal is to release 3 songs before the album release. "Send Me" was the first; we will have two more spread out over the months. We also have some music videos planned for 2027.

JFH (Scott): Have any of you personally been missionaries to other countries?

Christopher: Not yet. Yes, we've been involved with stateside missions and our current church is heavily missions based, but this is where the song "Send Me" comes from -- a cry to be sent. There's a restlessness within us to go and share the gospel, and God's borders are limitless.

JFH (Scott): What do you hope this song accomplishes for God's kingdom?

Jessie Schat: This song came from a place in me where I couldn't keep still or quiet. I had to sing, I had to share. And so my hope is that those who hear it resonate, remember the power of being Christ bearers, and are encouraged to go! No matter where we step foot, may we walk in the identity of missions, and share Christ's message.

JFH (Scott): What is an interesting fact about yourself that doesn't often come up in conversations?

Jessie: Chris has five kidneys :)
