The title track gets us started with a bit more of a stripped-down acoustic sound than I was expecting. It's not a big swerve from Mercy, though, and the ambient sounds are definitely still present. But even so, it reminds me more of Benjamin Daniel and Allen Odell, from the vocals to the acoustic guitar and even to the melodies. "A Note for the Flowers" especially reminds me of Daniel's "Lights Out," with more of an upbeat tempo and some nice guitar work. Meanwhile, the lyrics reflect the grace of God as we journey through life, most notably covered in "Turn Over The Stones," as Leyde encourages the listener: "Love is His face / all becomes grace / nothing goes to waste / you've never really been alone / so don't be afraid / surrender is praise / feel redemption's waves / turn over the stones."
like a fool is a wonderful collection of songs from this up-and-comer. I'm a big fan of the musical direction that Leyde's music is heading in, and I hope to hear more of this from him going forward. I'd also love to hear more in terms of bigger releases. These three tracks all work really well together, though. The EP is out now and should greatly appeal to fans of Benjamin Daniel, Skye Peterson, and Andy Squyres.
