Those lyrics take the listener on a journey of their own. Verse 1 establishes the "Red Fresh Rose" as the fresh, innocent love at the beginning of a marriage. But this is all in retrospect, as the chorus wonders, "I wanna go back/Don't you wanna go back?" Verse 2 introduces tension with a fire that "burned us to the foundation" and broke trust. Still, Low has hope that "Our love is one for the ages." While the bridge wonders if love has been hampered, a new chorus follows (along with a full band) that pleads, "Say yes, I'm still in love with you!" Ultimately, Low feels the "Red Fresh Rose" is returning in the end. It's quite the emotional journey to take in a short song, but Low pulls it off.
While Valentine's Day is often associated with the warm/fuzzy feelings of love, Tanya Low's "Red Fresh Rose" examines what happens after those feelings pass and love gets lost in the day-to-day drive of life. It's full of tension, which is what every true romance contains. The answers may not be easy, but a song like this encourages couples to keep fighting for love. That's just as important to be reminded of on Valentine's Day as all the warm feelings.

Tanya Low: There was a connection between my baptism at age 11 and the flood of original music that poured through me from that age forward. I have written about scripture, life, relationships, and have always been compelled to share it. People find it helpful, which is the reason I continue after all these years.
My siblings and I formed "Simple Truth." Strong harmonies marked our records in the 90s. We traveled and shared this scripture-music with churches.
After Simple Truth, two labels talked with me. We had two littles and very few resources. It wasn't the right time. Eventually, we took the indie route. I recorded several solo albums. My husband Dallas has always been very supportive, and our kids play instruments and share their originals at concerts we give around our town of Spokane, WA. And it's an open door to share God's love with people, as a family. We enjoyed living with little when we traveled in a big old bus for four years as a family, and now with plenty because of how our business is blessed by God to expand. It's grand how God works when we dare to live by faith and not by sight. God has blessed us with 6 amazing children, 2 of whom are in heaven.
Tanya: Dallas and I had a great honeymoon phase. About 7 years and 2 kids later, major life changes revealed parts of each other we had never seen. Even though we liked and loved each other, our trust was not what it used to be. Life can be traumatic. I think before I began writing this song with Stephan Gaus, I felt a great longing for things to go back to how they had felt early on. I wrote this song as a brave plea to my man, tears streaming. We got EFT therapy, which has revolutionized the way we communicate feelings and really SEE each other. God (and our therapist) helped us to rebuild our trust. This song is now a celebration of the past 5 or so years, when we have felt closer and more secure than ever with one another.
Tanya: No. This world needs more authenticity, more vulnerability. Maybe then, we would have more connection. I feel this is part of my calling, to share the real hurt and the real possibilities to connect within that hurt. Too many people run away when things get repetitively hard in a long-term relationship. But as the Red Fresh lyric states, "We're not defined by the hardest times." So my purpose in sharing the hard stuff is to let it coexist with the beauty, that people will not feel alone in their pain and that they might hear hope. I talk about that in my song "Pain on Beauty," from my last record, which got me through my dad's recent death.
Tanya: Thank you, that means a lot to me. I listen back a lot. If the way I am singing doesn't sound like what I wanted to convey, I give it another go in the vocal booth. I am a really emotional singer. It's important that what I am saying w the lyric is coming through. So I am really trying to feel it all again every time I record. Exhausting, but also exhilarating. I love recording, because I know these songs will be with people at moments they really need them.
Tanya: I just want to breathe hope and help couples find the dance again. To help identify and express something they could be feeling... Sometimes we need to wake up and realize there is a closeness we could unlock, that we've been starving for. There is hope for healing! I know that's not everyone's story, but I think it relates to a lot of people.
Tanya: I highly recommend a book called "Hold Me Tight" by Dr. Sue Johnson. There is also a Christian version of this book, "Created for Connection." She talks about slowing down, listening well, hearing one another as a goal, not fixing problems as the goal. Specifically EFT therapy is different than a lot of therapies out there, and it was really great for us to have that third party (therapist) to get us out of our "vortex" moments, and talk through traumas. Complete forgiveness can only really connect us when we have empathy and listen to what the other person was experiencing in moments of hurt. Even the offender. Therapy helps, but this book is a great place to start. We have led two small groups through this, and seen couples transform.
Tanya: I am planning two albums right now, and beginning the recording process. One album will be focused on relationships. The other will be a scriptural and vertical worship focused project. I want to work on them simultaneously, so I have creative freedom to work in both genres. My siblings and I are working on a song called "Not of Stone," about reaching and finding each other in this polarizing world.
In town, I plan to sing the national anthem at some games, and share concerts with my awesome family at some fundraisers this year!
Tanya: I am eclectic, so depends on the mood! Definitely this Valentine's Day, Dallas and I will do something fun like pretending to be secret agents "Tamara" and "Darren" and going on a Scavenger Hunt. We need some good laughs this weekend!
