What’s the next step? I can’t say

I told my heart we’d never have to walk this road again

What are my plans? I’m not sure

My plans and you have just walked out the door

If you ask me what my heart is telling me, I don’t know

We’re not speaking anymore

What’s a promise, anyway?

Some words you hope you’ll never have to think about again?

Or is it something so much more –

That shapes your life in ways you can’t ignore?

I’d ask my heart to help me understand words like these

But we’re not speaking anymore

I don’t blame my heart for treating me this way

I let our whole world fall apart

I’d apologize, but what is there to say to a broken heart?

There’s a letter in the drawer

You said it’s not too late for me to start my life again

But I can’t bounce back, like before

And find another future to explore

And you’re the one I used to lean upon in times like these,

But we’re not speaking anymore, no

We’re not speaking anymore

Behind the Song:
"Sometimes a line presents itself to you and demands to be turned into a song. That’s what happened here. We were debating something at work and a colleague asked me, “What’s your heart telling you?” I said, “I don’t know. We’re not on speaking terms.” I grabbed a pad of paper and wrote that line down. I knew it could be the cornerstone of a good song if I put a little work into it. I always wanted to write a torch song, so that’s the musical path I went down, even though it requires a wider musical vocabulary in terms of chord progressions and modulations. It ended up being a enjoyable exercise in stretching my boundaries and to me it feels both classic and contemporary, in the way that the music of Norah Jones or Diana Krall does. The band really gave it that classic torch song feel and Mia Boostrom absolutely caresses the melody to bring out all the post-breakup anguish in the lyrics."
