03. Holding On To You

History
by Paul Colman

All I want is you
All I need is you
And I do believe what you say is true
But I don’t understand
Why it’s taken me so long to know

Well I tried to be everything I need
But a broken heart was all that I achieved
Still I don’t understand
Why it’s taken me so long to know You never change
Your love remains
Oh God I’m holding onto you
When I’m afraid
Still your love remains
Oh God I’m holding onto you

I just want to be
With you every day
Never let you down
Never walk away
But I know if I do
You will be waiting for me

Behind the Song:
"“Holding On To You” was one of those songs that required many hours of re-writing. The verses were written on a tour in Denmark. It was very late at night, I was on my own, and I was feeling very low. The lyrics were heart-felt, and the goal on this record, lyrically, was to include words that truly came from my heart. I was ashamed that it had taken me so long to know that God is everything. I wanted to come clean and confess that I had spent too much time trying to build security and strength in myself, and that had left me empty and broken-hearted. We had a few versions of the chorus that were good, but not great. It wasn’t until a truly inspired moment with (co-writers) Ed Cash and Jason Ingram that the final chorus came out. I had invested countless hours of sharing my heart with Jason and Ed, and this moment was truly a payoff as they helped me finish the song. Singing the chorus in the studio was one of the highlights of the recording process. I felt so liberated to be confessing the words. James 5:16 encourages us to, Confess our sins to each other and to pray for each other." - Paul Colman
