04. Never Said

Star-Studded-Super-Step
by Poor Old Lu

In the summer's chill
We say the winter kills
But we don't know ourselves
Well enough to know if this is true
Ask a question here
And get an answer there
Well it can take us years to
Get to the One that sees us thru

You never said which things were real
I don't always know what's real to me
Someone right here said that He is gonna stay
You never said which things were real
I don't always know what's real to me
Someone right here said He's willing to explain

Take a moment now to step out
Think what everything is about
Turn again to face the proud
They're saying now that they don't know
Where to put our hands
Who to tell us when and should we can
But we will lose our heads
From watching our confusion grow

Does the headache know?
Do our faces show?
That all we think we need
Is just the things we want
Sometimes I feel so gone
And my ways are often wrong
We've just got to realize
There's Someone more in this song

Behind the Song:
'Written and recorded in 1992 for our album 'Star-Studded-Super-Step', 'Never Said' was a strange and perfect fit. It was light and bouncy. It was funky and driving. The vocals were sing-songy during the verses, but more agressive during the chorus. 'Never Said' was also an occasional fun number to perform in concert. A couple of interesting notes about this song. First, the drum take was always a bit questionable. There are a few spots during the choruses where Jesse should like he's 'off', so to speak, though it seems that wasn't the case. Either way, it became a running joke over the years for Jesse to make some strange drum hits during this song -- just so we'd all remember. Second, we all really liked the bridge in this song. We liked it so much, in fact, that we added the *exact* same bridge in the song 'Enough' off of our 1996 album, 'A Picture of the Eighth Wonder'. Poor Old Lu's live album features a medley of 'Enough/Never Said' with the bridge acting as the common tie between the songs. For all of the imagery in this song, it is actually fairly simple lyrically -- though we may grow increasingly confused, grieved, and sinful, only the Lord can *truly* show us which way to go.' - Poor Old Lu
