Nine years ago, Peterson composed his musical rendition of the Christmas story to remind people of the holiday's true significance. Past events have featured such artists as Alison Krauss, Buddy Miller, David Wilcox, Phil Keaggy, Mindy Smith, Pierce Pettis, Matt Slocum and members of Nickel Creek, who have joined Peterson for an in-the-round segment of original material before gathering on stage to perform his musical, Behold the Lamb of God: The True Tall Tale of the Coming of Christ.
Responding to demand from fans of his Christmas concert, in 2004, Peterson recorded the songs on an album titled Behold the Lamb of God. The album received the 2004 Best Album of the Year, World Christian Music's Editors Choice Award.
