Mary Mary, The Sound

MOBILE, Alabama (October 29, 2008) – This week, the sound of success for Mary Mary’s new CD is chart-topping success. The Sound, which was released last week to critical acclaim, now claims the top spot on Billboard’s Top Christian & Gospel charts. Mary Mary makes their highest debut on the Billboard Top 200 chart of all music, landing at #7. That also makes The Sound the week’s third highest debut behind AC/DC and the soundtrack for High School Musical 3.

The Sound also sits a top the Billboard Top Gospel chart. The chart success beats the duo’s #8 debut for their last studio CD, Mary Mary, which was released in 2005.

With able assistance from longtime producer and collaborator Warryn Campbell, Erica Campbell and Tina Campbell, the real life sisters better known as Mary Mary, weave their love of truth-grounded Gospel music into a tuneful blend of R&B, pop, soul, jazz, electronic music and more. (Erica's husband, Warryn Campbell also helmed the first two Mary Mary albums, the RIAA gold- and platinum-certified Thankful and the RIAA gold-certified Incredible.)

The Sound premieres 11 new Mary Mary songs including the album’s recently released lead single, “Get Up,” a pop-infused anthem of praise and empowerment, which is starting to get strong airplay at CHR radio. Other tracks on The Sound include the R&B-flavored title track “The Sound,” “Superfriend,” “God In Me,” “Boom,” “I'm Running,” “Forgiven Me,” “Dirt,” “Seattle,” “I Worship You” and “It Will All Be Worth It.”

Giving music fans reason to buy The Sound are the multiple positive reviews in mainstream, gospel and Christian media outlets alike. A sampling:

Gospel Music Channel: “Tina and Erica deserve the attention that befalls their mainstream counterparts like Rihanna and Mary J. Blige. But whether or not they get it, this duo has simply surpassed all of their previous efforts with The Sound, and that’s saying a lot. They are continually setting new standards for artistic greatness, and this album has only solidified their lead in that regard.”

GospelFava: “Once again, Mary Mary has delivered an epic body of work. With timeless truths delivered over a fresh new sound, The Sound is slated to make a severe impact on both the gospel and secular arenas alike. Without question, chalk up another bonafide hit for sisters Campbell.”

People Magazine: 3 ½ stars. “Their praise-worthy new CD finds this sisterly duo continuing to expand the sonic horizons of contemporary gospel with songs like “Get Up,” the “Off the Wall”-inspired first single, which has cracked both the R&B and dance charts.”

ChristianityToday.com: “The Sound finds the Campbell’s (Mary Mary sisters Tina and Erica) continuing to set the bar ridiculously high…. The Sound is the most progressive urban disc to come out of Christian and gospel music in 2008, and possibly even mainstream music….The Sound is an undisputed triumph….The Sound amplifies their potential for reaching beyond stylistic boundaries, deepening the creative well from which they draw, and setting a new standard of excellence in urban and gospel music.”

Soultracks.com: “Wonderful singers and perhaps even better songwriters, they, along with the unofficial third member of the group, Warryn Campbell (Erica's husband), have performed a marvelous balancing act, acknowledging the developments of modern music while keeping consistent themes of praise and self-surrender in their music…So what's surprising about their newest disc, The Sound, is how Mary Mary can sound so new -- and maybe even better -- five records into their career.”
