(Nashville, Tenn.) Nov. 26, 2008 –International outreach organization Mocha Club announces the kick-off of its “I Need Africa More Than Africa Needs Me” campaign next month. The initiative aims to re-cast Africa’s image as a continent of despair by raising awareness of the joy and hope that exists among the African people.
Beginning Dec. 1, 2008, interested participants may go online to www.mochaclub.org and purchase one or more American Apparel t-shirts with the phrase “I Need Africa More Than Africa Needs Me.” Shirts are also available to those who join Mocha Club by pledging $7 each month—the cost of two mochas. Proceeds will go to the Mocha Club project of the donor’s choice, including orphan care, job creation, HIV/AIDS relief, education improvement, aid to child mothers, and Sudan regrowth.
Mocha Club director Barrett Ward moved to Ethiopia last year and has experienced Africa’s hardships firsthand. Inspired by the people’s joy amidst such tremendous turmoil, he conceived this campaign. Ward explains, “It’s true, there are great tragedies playing out in Africa every day, suffering that is unimaginable. But the truth is, in Africa I find hearts full of victory. I’m not saying Africa does not need our efforts. But for me, I’ve come to understand that I need Africa more than Africa needs me. It’s Africa that has taught me that possessions in my hands will never be as valuable as peace in my heart.”
Formed in 2005, Mocha Club is a division of African Leadership [www.africanleadership.org], a pastor-training organization based in Nashville, Tenn. The ministry offers everyday people an opportunity to positively impact Africa by giving as little as $7 a month.
