The Stryper frontman’s Country-tinged rock tune may be surprising at first glance, but his tongue-in-cheek assault on rock and rollers invading Music City is rooted in respect for the genre, and his own surprising Country roots.
"I wrote the song ‘Radio’ based on my own history in country music and on what seems to be a surge of rock stars trying to become country stars,” says Sweet, who grew up with country music and played on his dad Phil Sweet’s country songs - including the #1 hit “I Don't Want To Have To Marry You.” “I'm a metal head at heart and always will be, but I've had the opportunity to write with some of the best writers in Nashville. Guys like Blair Daly, Bruce Wallace and Luke Laird. And I've learned how talented these guys are and how serious they take their job. Just as metal is a lifestyle, country is as well and you have to live it, not just wake up one morning and decide you're gonna be a country star.”
Adds Sweet, “This song and music video is just me having a little fun with all the guys that think they can just throw on a cowboy hat, some cowboy boots, move to Nashville and become country stars. The same would apply to country stars trying to become metal heads. Kind of funny when you think about it. Country music, just like rock, is a lifestyle rich with history and authenticity and each genre should be treated with great respect. You can’t fake it. You can try, but the fans will see right through it.”
Sweet wrote and produced One Sided War. His solo band is comprised of Whitesnake guitarist Joel Hoekstra, Evanescence drummer Will Hunt, bassist John O’Boyle and guitarist Ethan Brosh. The new album showcases a full plate of hard rock and classic metal riffs that Sweet has come to be known for throughout his career.
Michael Sweet is best known as the singer, guitarist, songwriter and producer for iconic rock band Stryper, selling over 10 million albums worldwide to date. He hits the road with Stryper this fall on the 30th Anniversary To Hell with the Devil Tour, celebrating the multi-platinum hit album that made MTV history. In addition to Stryper, Sweet has had a successful solo career, and he served as the guitarist and co-vocalist for the legendary classic rock band BOSTON from 2007-2011.
