South Bronx, NY - “Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the good fight, having faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and have shipwrecked the faith.” [1 Timothy 1:18-19]
Moving according to his own designated path, YP aka Young Paul has been viewed through a variety of lenses over the years. From the black sheep to a trendsetting voice, his purpose in Christian hip hop has never faltered. YP is an artist that has been entrusted with keeping the essence of hip hop alive. While some may have questioned choices along the way, there is no way to deny his passion for the work that has been assigned to him. When the battle is at hand, a Big Choppa is needed to fight the good fight.
“In the heart of the city, where shadows merge, the gun and the axe cross paths. A silent battle brews and the skyline bears witness.”
On Choppa, YP aka Young Paul presents a collection of collaborations with a virtual who’s who of gritty CHH artists.
Selah The Corner, C4 Crotona, Q-Flo, Jered Sanders, and Braille are only a few of the incredible artists that bring their talents to the project. In the same vein as 2023’s ‘Ninety Nine’ by producer Ayo Shamir, Choppa has been positioned to be a highlight of 2024 for the genre of Christian rap.
In traditional mixtape style, DJ Charlie Washed hosts the project, weaving its stories together to create a completed picture of the intersection of the streets and faith. Of course the Guillotine himself, YP, sets the bar for the lyrical assault that rains down throughout Choppa’s full run.
Choppa is available across digital streaming platforms beginning May 10, 2024.
YP continues to be one of the most consistent artists in the CHH space, both in quantity and, most importantly, quality. He has been a spearhead for a collective of artists that have reinvigorated high quality boom bap into a genre that was stuck in a “trap” for too long. With Choppa, we get a reminder that lyricism remains the heartbeat of hip hop and Christ is the one who provides the gift to be used for His glory.
Be sure to take in the full Choppa experience and add your favorite records to your personal playlist!
