In Beyond Us, King draws on his own experience of navigating life's unpredictability. He reflects on the years spent learning, unlearning, making mistakes, and facing countless moments of indecision. The album was born out of King’s personal challenges, including moving countries alone in the middle of a pandemic, the disintegration of his church community, and the unraveling of all that he once considered certain. Through these experiences, King came to a deeper understanding of faith, realizing the vast difference between his own human logic and the boundless wisdom of God.
“So much of life feels out of our control,” King shares. “There’s an infinite gap between our logic and that of God, but through creating this album, I’ve discovered the power of abdication from my own will and the freedom that comes from leaning into His boundless wisdom and love that surpasses all understanding. It’s way over our heads, beyond us in every way, yet in reach should we choose to trust Him.”
A pivotal moment for King occurred in early 2022 while visiting Dublin, Ireland, where his father encouraged him to explore the Vale of Avoca. The tranquil confluence of two rivers inspired King to reflect on his own faith journey. The meeting of the waters became a metaphor for what it means to know God—a collision, purification, and redirection.
This transformative experience led King to pivot from a previous project and begin work on Beyond Us. Through his music, King hopes to create a sacred space where people can come together in worship, with their questions, doubts, and affections for Jesus.
"God’s extravagant love and kindness aren’t just beyond me, they’re beyond all of us," King explains. "This album is my attempt to unite us under a God who is greater than anything we could ever imagine and to invite everyone into a space of worship, surrender, and community."
Beyond Us brings together a diverse range of voices and perspectives, with King co-writing and producing with some of his closest friends including Ben Tan, Jason Ingram among many others.
While Beyond Us is Aodhán’s first album as a solo artist, he has found success in the music industry by being in the two-time GRAMMY-nominated band Hillsong Young & Free, garnering over 1.2 billion streams in North America, multiple #1 singles, and performances at over 225 live events worldwide.
