Every Moment Holy: Prayer Songs is an ongoing project centered in the creation of prayerful, meditative songs based on passages from the best selling prayer-book series Every Moment Holy. EMH author Douglas Kaine McKelvey and Jon Lowry—the bassist from the band Unspoken—have been friends and co-writers since 2009. In April of 2025, soon after a frightening medical emergency involving one of Jon’s daughters, the two stumbled upon the idea of creating short, psalm-like songs to serve individuals and churches in moments of need, petition, thanksgiving, and worship.
“I remember my own inadequate words as I tried to comfort my kids as we rushed to the hospital,” Jon says, “and my own faltering prayers as I wondered if I’d just seen my daughter alive for the last time. I thought of Every Moment Holy and how the prayers Doug had written so often put words to the things I wanted to say but didn’t know how. In that moment of crisis I wished I had some form of Every Moment Holy prayers that could travel beyond the printed page such that I could pray them even while driving.”
A few weeks later—with his daughter completely healthy again, but with those memories of childlike helplessness still fresh—Jon and Doug penned this simple chorus based off of Doug’s prayer For the Morning of a Medical Procedure:
I will trust You, I will trust You to lead me well
Down the mountain, through the valley, who can tell
Where the road goes, You alone know
Bid me follow, Lord, I will follow
I will trust You, I will trust You to lead me well
“We played around with verse ideas for awhile,” Doug says, “but both came to the sudden conclusion that maybe that simple refrain was all the song needed to be. A couple minutes later we hit on the idea of also making the track seamlessly loop-able, so that people could put a prayer song on repeat and sit in that space—that particular articulation of the heart to God—as long as they wanted or needed to.”
The Every Moment Holy: Prayer Songs debut, titled Q1 2026, released in January as a twenty-song, double-length album with tracks based on a diverse assortment of Doug’s prayers including For the Ritual of Morning Coffee, For a Road Trip, For Nightfall, and seventeen others. Lowry and McKelvey now plan on releasing additional EMH: Prayer Song projects every quarter for the foreseeable future.
The next, ten-song album, Q2 2026, will release to all major streaming platforms May 29th. This new project includes prayer songs For Battling a Destructive Desire, For the Death of a Dream, and For Feasting with Friends, plus seven more. As with the Q1 2026 album, the songs on this second album have been intentionally crafted to serve individuals engaged in personal, meditative prayer, as well as to serve churches or other worshipful gatherings.
