Shane & Shane
Glory In The Highest: A Christmas Record

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 10 tracks: 35 minutes, 14 seconds
Street Date: October 14, 2008

Another Christmas draws near, and the expected collections of classic favorites have begun to roll in as usual. Among these is Glory In The Highest, the new release from Texas duo Shane Barnard and Shane Everett, better known as Shane & Shane.

Glory In The Highest features a mix of classics and contemporary favorites, all performed in the duo's familiar acoustic/folk style. Among the traditional songs included are "O Holy Night," "White Christmas," and "Silent Night." Also included are three original songs: "Born To Die," "Holiday," and the title track.

This is, unsurprisingly, a fairly mellow album. The two Shanes trade vocal duties with an accompaniment of acoustic guitars, violins, bass, and the occasional drums. Bernard's wife, and fellow artist, Bethany Dillon is also heard performing background vocals. The presentation is straightforward, without much improvising or creativity. The only noticeable exceptions are "O Holy Night" and "Away In A Manger," both of which have a slightly jazzy, more upbeat feel than the other tracks.

Listeners are more likely to be interested in the three original tracks, which vary in quality. "Born To Die" is a timely reminder of the real meaning of Christmas, showing that the purpose of Jesus' life was always His anticipated death on the cross. "Glory In The Highest" has a more praise and worship feel, which is well executed. The only remarkably weak track is the third original song, "Holiday." Some may appreciate the rambling gospel feel, but it is more aggravating than creative.

For a Christmas collection, Glory In The Highest, is unremarkable. Filled primarily with songs that have been heard a hundred times before, listeners will find nothing noteworthy to get excited about. That said, these are well-loved classics that are more than appropriate for a relaxing listen as the days get shorter and the nights get colder.
