Hillsong Chapel
Yahweh

Album length: 13 tracks: 64 minutes, 59 seconds
Street Date: October 26, 2010

Worship and prayer are two things that go along great together. The act of glorifying the Savior through song and seeking his will on a daily basis go hand and hand. So of course the folks down at Hillsong figured it would be great to give some music to assist by providing the fellow Christ-follower with music that might better suit those quiet times of devotion. To do this, they've developed a new project, entitled Hillsong Chapel, in which they take songs from former albums and give them an acoustic arrangement. And to begin the project, we are given Yahweh.

The album begins softly with the now-classic "Hosanna." However, the orchestration of the song isn't much different from the original. They are by no means carbon copies, but the flow of the melody is not altered at all. And sadly, this continues through most of the album. With "You'll Come," the song feels very much the same - minus the drums. The same could be said of "Salvation Is Here" as the only thing it's missing is loud drums and a delay setting for the acoustic guitar.

On the other hand, songs like "Run" and "The Time Has Come" have some obvious alterations, such as different keys, time signatures, and even melodies. At points, they would seem to even improve on their predecessors. Of course there are some tracks that continue with the greatness they held before, such as "Yahweh" and "This Is Our God," but to say that they make the album worth it would be a misconception.

There are two major downsides to the album: one, the album does not flow seamlessly from song to song and two, it's a live album. If the intention was to have music to play during devotions and prayer, the album missed the mark. If it was to release a best hits collection with slightly new arrangements, then sure, they would have completed their goal with excellence. That is not to say the album has nothing to offer and that it isn't anointed, just simply that the goal hasn't been reached yet. But if you know Hillsong, then you know that this is only the beginning.

JFH Staff's Second Opinion

Hillsong presents its latest project with their new Hillsong Chapel series that offers some of their most well known praise and worship songs presented in a style that would be better suited for smaller settings or your quiet time. Yahweh is the first installment and was recorded at their chapel in front of a small body of believers in 2009 and includes a DVD and chord charts for worship leaders to use. Yahweh is captured in a more intimate acoustic live setting that puts more emphasis on focusing the attention towards God and not the light show and loud guitars. Tunes like the ambient "You'll Come" and "The Time Has Come" get a rootsy makeover. Classics like "Run" and "Came to My Rescue" feature crowd interaction that presents the intent of Hillsong which is to aid in worship, not focus on the band. Tracks like "Salvation is Here" and "Yahweh" shine here because of their stripped down instrumentation and praiseful lyrics. Yahweh is a nice compliment to any believer's music collection, but most of the tunes are very similar to the originals, featuring more acoustic guitar and less thumping drums and guitar delays. However, Yahweh is a great album to put on Sunday afternoon after worship service and spend time alone with God because it does get your heart pointed upward with impressive acoustic arrangements of some of Hillsong's best songs. - Jason Rooks, 10/30/10
