For years Starflyer 59 has won the hearts of many and they continue to do so today. It would be inappropriate to say that their music has gotten "old" (pun intended). In fact, their music continues to improve with each new recording. With 6 full-length albums, 5 EP's, 2 live EP's, a best-of, and 2 vinyl singles behind them, they continue to spread their wings and have created yet an album worthy of your attention.
Old opens up with "Underneath," which sets the tone for the album. Through the use of beautifully arranged music, the listener knows they are in for a treat. "Major Awards" follows, a song known to some as "The Sheriff," which is the name it was given during pre-production (the original demo can be found at www.starflyer59.net). The album continues to flow with a classic rock sound, similar to the likes of Americana and The Fashion Focus. The title track "Old" slows things down a bit, replacing guitars with chimes and piano. "Unbelievers" is reminiscent of previous SF59 classic songs. The album then closes with "First Heart Attack," a song about the trials of life. It is only appropriate that the song then end with a drumbeat to simulate that of a human heartbeat.
Starflyer 59 has done it again and have created a breath-taking album. It is obvious that the band is still continuing to mature musically. The style of the album is slightly different than that of past material, however, you can still hear some of that classic Starflyer sound as the groundwork here. What makes the album more amazing is that the band self-produced the album, with a little help from Aaron Sprinkle (Poor Old Lu). This is the first time that they have produced their own album, and they have shown themselves worthy. This is one album I can assure you that won't get "old."
