READER RATING:

Relient K has been on a roll this year. With a new album this summer and a killer tour with Switchfoot currently underway, one would think the Canton, Ohio natives wouldn't have much time for anything else. Well, think again, because Matt, Matt, and friends have bestowed a new EP upon us. Titled The Creepier EP...er is a callback to their Creepy EP from the Anatomy days.

Comprised of three new songs that they recorded while on the road, these tracks are piano-driven, silly, and light, definitely a treat for any Relient K fan. All three songs are upbeat and have a jazz-y vibe to them. "The Halloween Blues" opens the EP, and is a brassy tune, sounding very similar to an old school Halloween song that would be at home at any party this Fall. Matt Thiessen jams out on the piano while singing about Fall and Halloween in Ohio, and how he would always have the blues during this time of the year.

"The Cup" is a silly track that name-drops several different candies in the 3:13 runtime. The lyrics are classic Relient K, but sonically it has a new feel to it, showing the growth that they've all made as musicians, while not forgetting where they started.

"Halloween in Owatonna" closes out the EP, and is the shortest track on the lineup, clocking in at only 1:25. Like most Relient K songs that are a bit heavier, it's short and sweet. Again, Matt sings and reflects on Halloween, while a pounding piano and guitar take prominence on the track.

Overall, The Creepier EP... er feels far too short, but it's great to see that Relient K is still having fun and can still surprise their audience, considering they've been around for nearly 20 years. The Creepier EP is a definite treat for those who are Relient K fans, Fall fans, or anyone in between.

JFH Staff's Second Opinion

It's October, which means that the Christian music industry is already weeks-deep into the Christmas music season. But in the midst of the early holiday madness, one band is taking another route. Relient K has already released one full-length album this year, with a surprise live album on vinyl through SMLXL Vinyl, and they've surprised us yet again with their three-song Halloween EP, The Creepier EP...er. Hearkening back to the sounds of The Beatles (with a little Ben Folds action in there), "The Halloween Blues" is a bouncy song that's perfect for the holiday (though maybe some silly synth in the background would've added a bit to it). "The Cup" is my favorite track here, as it's an ode to the Butterfinger peanut butter cup. Butterfingers proper are my candy bar of choice, but Butterfinger Cups are just fine, as well (and 3 Musketeers get no cheers from me, if we're being real). Hearing Matt Thiessen beg his neighbor for some candy despite his lack of trick-or-treat attire is rather humorous. "Halloween In Owatonna" rocks a little more than the other two songs. The lyrics can be rather ominous if you're not familiar with RK's particular brand of humor, but it's all in good fun and puts a smile on my face. I know it's more appropriate and traditional to make a full-length Christmas album if you're going to make a holiday-themed album, but in all honesty, if this is what Relient K can do for Halloween, I wouldn't mind a whole album's worth of it. Thanks for the treat, guys! - Review date: 10/30/16, written by Scott Fryberger
