The songwriter of the Dove Award winning "Above All" and various country hits, Lenny LeBlanc, is no stranger to the music industry. His latest album, Love Like No Other, begins with a promising mixture of sounds. The title track is calm, but memorable, as is "Hallelujah." With a smooth, bluegrass piano sound thrown in, "You Reign" easily sounds like the final song at a lively Sunday worship service. "One Day" centers on one day being able to worship in the presence of God, with striking lyrics ("One day I will bow my knee and touch the scars that were meant for me…One day I will hear the song that heaven sings and I will sing along"). Oddly, the powerful verses in "The God Who Saves" are more memorable than the rather weak chorus, but it is still an enjoyable track.
It is incredible how continuously LeBlanc relies on the repetition of a song name throughout any given song. Sometimes this effect works, such as in "Whiter Than Snow" and "You Reign," but more often it does not. "Whatever It Take," "Show Me Your Way," "Rise," and "You First" all face this repetition and end up sounding weak and remarkably similar. Unfortunately, these four tracks follow one another at the end of the album, leading to a bland conclusion, which also consists of a newly recorded version of the 70's pop hit "Falling" from the duo LeBlanc and Carr.
When first listening through the entire album, it is very difficult to distinguish one song from another, with only a few exceptions. After listening multiple times, it becomes easier to discern differences between the tracks, but it also leads to the conclusion that Love Like No Other still has a lack of variety. As someone well aware of the need for diversity to stand out in the Christian music industry, it was a disappointment that LeBlanc did not rise to this challenge.
