Sometimes rock bands have a problem with making records that sound the same. The songs sound like they all blend together with the same melodies, riffs, and styles. Not so with Columbus-bred rockers Over Ashes. The three-piece, born from the rumble that once was Selectric Records' Cross Culture, has put together a debut that is full of straight rock tracks, with a few worship ballads thrown in for good measure.
The interesting thing about Over Ashes' debut, Begin Again, is that almost every track is a solid rock song, but each song also has much diversity stylistically and melodically. None of the tracks sound the same, but the vocals can get a little tiring. Some tracks, like the almost schizophrenic "Riot" and the power-ballad "She Won't" are some definite highlights. The problem with other songs lies with the choruses, which are repeated too many times. Once or twice is fine, but once the band gets past three times at the end of the song, it can begin to wear out its welcome. This is evidenced particularly in "Riot" and "The Author," the latter of which boasts a lengthy chorus about our Creator, yet it becomes very monotonous. Another interesting track is the album closer, "Wave," which has a very fierce, emotional feel to it, and is a great way to finish out the album.
Other highlights on Begin Again include the album opener "Hangin' On," the powerful "Annual Father," and the grunge/pop feel of "One Of These Days." Over Ashes has a very original musical touch and an enormous love for God. This is a very diverse debut outing for the band, and it will be interesting to see how they are welcomed into the Christian music industry.
