Project 86's final album on Tooth & Nail Records was indeed a doozy. They had a rocky history with the label, but they definitely managed to bow out of label life in a big way. 2007's Rival Factions had been received well by some fans, but it was a pretty significant departure for them, stylistically. The bold Picket Fence Cartel (in spite of its yawn-inducing album cover) was a rocker from start to finish. I have a fond memory of sitting in the restaurant portion of the local club Crocodile Rock (RIP...literally! They have since torn down the building) to interview P86's Andrew Schwab about this album.
Revisiting the album for this countdown, I'm reminded just how many strong tracks this record possesses. I love the one-two punch of the openers "Destroyer" and "The Butcher," which is nicely complemented by the pairing final pieces, "The Black Brigade" (which feels like a conscious rev-up) and the epic conclusion, "To Sand We Return." It's hard to believe next year is this album's tenth anniversary already!
