Dex the Nerd Who Loves Jesus Interview

With the release of a brand new single and his first-ever book, hip-hop artist artist Dex the Nerd Who Loves Jesus answered a few questions from JFH's John DiBiase...
This interview took place February 7, 2026.

  • JFH (John DiBiase): For people who may be discovering you for the first time, how would you introduce Dex the Nerd Who Loves Jesus - both the name and the heart behind it?

Dex the Nerd Who Loves Jesus: I chose the name Dex the Nerd Who Loves Jesus because I wanted to be upfront about my faith and not hide it while working in the music industry. Scripture tells us that if we're ashamed of Christ before others, that matters (Luke 9:26), and I never wanted my faith to be something I tucked away. What you see is what you get.

The name reflects my love for the Lord while also embracing who I am: a full-on nerd. I believe God can use every part of who we are when we submit it to Him. My love for Christ and my love for nerd culture don't compete; they come together.

  • JFH (John): Dex and the Power of the Great Light feels like a big step beyond just music. It's celebratory, imaginative, and deeply faith-driven. What were you hoping people would feel when they first step into this world?

Dex: When people step into this world, I wanted them to feel the real pressure of everyday life -- battling the flesh, carrying your cross daily, and trying to stay Christ-centered in a world that constantly pulls you in another direction. Jesus tells us we are called to be in the world, but not of the world (John 17:14-16), and living in that tension isn't always easy.

Chris and I wanted to show that following Jesus can still be imaginative, creative, and fun, while also being honest about real struggles. Faith doesn't always align with what the world wants from us, and that conflict can feel complicated, but it's also where growth, obedience, and reliance on God are formed.

  • JFH (John): The book emphasizes reliance on the Holy Spirit rather than personal strength. Was that theme born out of your own personal journey?

Dex: Most definitely. This is something I constantly have to remind myself -- that I'm not in control, God is. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding, and that truth runs through the entire story.

In the book, Dex relies on the Holy Spirit and the Armor of God. His strength doesn't come from himself, but from walking in the Spirit. Scripture reminds us that God's power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9), and that's something I live out daily and wanted reflected clearly in the story.

  • JFH (John): Dex encounters hardship, struggle, and growth -- moments many of us can relate to. What do you hope kids (and adults) understand about faith after reading it?

Dex: I hope they walk away knowing it's okay not to be perfect. It's okay to feel weak. Romans 8 reminds us that we all struggle, but there's no condemnation for those in Christ. Sometimes we think faith means having it all together, but God often uses us most when we're honest about our need for Him.

Both kids and adults face daily battles, and we wanted to show vulnerability that, even when we fall short, God is still faithful. When we surrender control and let Him lead, He can work through our imperfections for His glory.

  • JFH (John): You teamed up with Chris LoParco of A Story Told and illustrator Bowie. What did each of them bring that elevated the project beyond what you could've done alone?

Dex: Chris was incredible. This was my first book, and as a co-author, he helped shape the vision, refine my outlines, and bring structure and depth to the story. We prayed through decisions and really leaned on God throughout the process. His gift for storytelling helped turn ideas into something meaningful and cohesive.

Bowie is an absolutely gifted artist. No AI, just pure talent. This book took almost two years to complete, and the amount of time, prayer, and effort he poured into the artwork is unreal. He brought the world to life in a way that truly honors the message.

  • JFH (John): How did collaboration shape the final vision of the book -- especially balancing creativity with spiritual intention?

Dex: Collaboration was foundational. We came together in prayer and held each other accountable to keep God at the center. We didn't want this to feel like just another creative project; we wanted it to be something God could use for a greater purpose.

Scripture tells us that iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17), and that's exactly what happened. We even discussed how the book could be used as a Bible study or teaching resource for kids, youth leaders, and teachers. Fellowship and discipleship mean everything to me, and this project became a blessing beyond what we expected.

  • JFH (John): The book is accompanied by the single, "I Got the Light." Why was it important for music to be part of the story?

Dex: Music has always been one of the main ways I express myself, so it felt natural to include it. Psalm 96 talks about declaring the Lord through song, and that's always been part of my heart.

Partnering with Rapzilla -- one of the biggest Christian platforms -- was a huge blessing, and working with producer Jericko made everything come together seamlessly. We wanted to create a theme song that could live alongside the book; something fun, meaningful, and memorable that kids and listeners of all ages could connect with while engaging the story.

  • JFH (John): How does the song reinforce the themes of the book, especially for younger listeners?

Dex: "I Got the Light" focuses heavily on the Armor of God from Ephesians 6 and understanding that our strength comes from the Lord. The hook - "I got the light, and I'ma let it shine" - reflects Matthew 5:16, letting our light shine for God's glory, not our own.

The song also touches on spiritual warfare in a way kids can understand, especially in today's world of social media, bullying, and pressure to fit in. It encourages young listeners to be themselves, rely on God, and trust Him in their weakness, knowing He is fighting for them.

  • JFH (John): Do you see this as the beginning of a larger universe where music and storytelling continue to intersect?

Dex: Most definitely. It says "Book One" for a reason. Chris and I are already working on new ideas, and while it was a lot of work, we truly loved the process. The support from readers and listeners means a lot, and they deserve to see the story continue and grow.

  • JFH (John): Beyond the book and single, what can fans expect next from you musically or creatively?

Dex: Right now, I'm working on several projects with close friends and producers I've wanted to collaborate with for a long time. God has really surrounded me with supportive people, and I'm excited to keep creating. I'm also grateful to continue working with the Rapzilla family. They've been a huge blessing and source of encouragement.

  • JFH (John): Lastly, let's celebrate the "Nerd" part of Dex - what games or hobbies have you been into lately?

Dex: Lately, I've been diving into RPGs and MMOs, which honestly fits the book perfectly. I love playing support roles -- healer or tank is always my go-to.

Outside of gaming, my biggest focus is spending intentional time with my wife and finding creative ways to give back using the gifts God has given us. Time is precious, and over the years, I've learned to value loved ones more deeply. Everything we do now is about impact, teamwork, and keeping God at the center of it all.
