Nathan Oswalt is known for his Christ-centric songs or more touching numbers that focus on personal events and stories -- such as "Shadowlands." With his newest single, Nathan changes gears a bit and asks a question: "whatever happened to US?" The stylized title is very intentional as the capitalized "US" refers to the people of the United States. Given the 250th celebration of our country this year, it's a fitting song and timely release. Nathan asks, "
Why do we fight? Why do run away. Why do we keep on holding on to the wrongs of yesterday? Why do we hate? Why are we throwing stones," to open the song as he describes so many issues that have caused problems in our society. In the chorus he ponders further, putting a more biblical spin on the pledge of allegiance, "
One nation under God united and indivisible. One nation under God with liberty and justice for all. Land of the free; home of the brave. What will it take to become? One nation under God? Whatever happened to us?" It's a simple, yet poignant, thought. No blame is placed on anyone, and no sides are elevated over another. In fact, Nathan also puts the onus on Christ-followers to be the change when he sings, "
If change is ever gonna come it's gotta start with you and me. It's time to rise and shine a light; become who we were meant to be."
While the imagery used in the album art and some of the lyrics may seem to express Americanism or Christian Nationalism, that's not where this track is coming from. Nathan Oswalt's approach here is more of heartbreak at the current state of affairs. He expresses a desire for God to be the center of our lives again and urges followers of Christ to lead the way in spreading the change. The lyrics don't express any political agenda, but instead a spiritual agenda. Nathan Oswalt continues to be a songwriter that impresses me and "whatever happened to US?" is no exception. I'd encourage you to listen to this one over the holiday and pray about how God wants you to be the change for others.
