05. What Now

All Things New
by Steven Curtis Chapman

I saw the face of Jesus
In a little orphan girl
She was standing in the corner
On the other side of the world
And I heard the voice of Jesus
Gently whisper to my heart
Didn’t you say you wanted to find Me
Well here I am
Here you are

So what now
What will you do now that you’ve found Me
What now
What will you do with this treasure you’ve found
I know I may not look like what you expected
But if you’ll remember
This is right where I said I would be
You found Me
What now

I saw the face of Jesus
Down on Sixteenth Avenue
He was sleeping in an old car
While his mom when looking for food
And I heard the voice of Jesus
Gently whisper to my soul
Didn’t you say you wanted to know me
Where here I am
And it’s getting cold

So what now
What will you do now that you’ve found Me
What now
What will you do with this treasure you’ve found
I know I may not look like what you expected
But if you’ll remember
This is right where I said I would be
You found Me
What now

So come and know
Come and know, know me now
Come, come and know, know me now
Oh, come and know
Come, come and know, know me now
Come, come and know, know me now

What will you do now that you found Me
What now
What will you do with this treasure you’ve found
I know I may not look like what you expected
But if you’ll remember
This is right where I said I would be
You found Me
What now
What now

Behind the Song:
'This song was inspired by a trip to the orphanage Children’s Village in Long Fong outside of Beijing, China. When I visited, there was a little girl named Mau Mau who was about four years old at the time, standing in the corner. We tried our best to get a smile out of this little girl yet she had a very somber and distant look on her face. The workers at the orphanage explained that she had been that way most of the time she’s been there, not just to strangers, but to those who saw her daily. She just didn’t respond, and it broke my heart. When I came home and thought about that little face, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. I began to write this song because I felt like while I was there, that was one of the moments when I believed I heard Jesus speaking to my heart, not in an audible way, but like a prayer I’ve said so many times, “Jesus, I really want to know You, I really want to see you. I want to know where You are and I want to respond to You.” I believe that day, standing in that orphanage, I saw the face of Jesus, and I felt like I had heard Him say, “What are you going to do now that you’ve found me? How are you going to respond? In scripture, I said I’d be in the naked when you clothe them, I’d be in the prisoners when you visit them, I’d be in the hungry when you feed them, I would be in the orphans and the widows when you care for them.” I returned to China to perform recently, and the really wonderful part about this story is I saw Mau Mau. She’s been adopted by a family that works in the orphanage. I performed this song and she came on stage and stood with me as I sang and gave me a big hug at the end of it. This song continues to haunt me with that question, what are we going to do when we see Jesus show up? How are we going to respond to him?' - Steven Curtis Chapman
