09. Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Beautiful News
by Matt Redman

So fearfully and wonderfully made,
How could they say there is no God?
Reminded every breath that I take,
It´s by Your hand I have been formed
So what am I going to do with this life You gave me?
What could I do but live for Your praise?

You gave me this breath,
And You gave me this strength,
And every day I´ll live to obey You.
With all of my heart,
With all of my soul;
Let every breath I´m breathing display You God.

There´s elegance in all you create
Your grand designs leave us amazed.
The wonders of the way we´ve been made
Speak of Your power, tell of Your grace.
So what am I going to do with this life You gave me?
What could I do but live for Your praise?

So what am I going to do with this life You gave me?
What am I going to do with this life?
What I am I going to do in these days You´ve ordained?
What am I going to do with this life?

Behind the Song:
Bible reference: Psalm 139

'This song started being written moments after my wife and I had just seen an ultrasound scan of our new little baby growing in the womb. Amazed again at the miracle of life, this thought, based on Psalm 139 entered my head, ´So fearfully and wonderfully made, how could they say there is no God?´ That became the opening line of the song.

Sometimes I find it hard to fathom that people can´t recognise evidence of our Creator. You need look no further than your own body to see the wonders of His deisign. As the song says, with every breath we take we´re reminded that there is One who made us and sustains our every living moment.

Just before mixing this song, we had the idea of adding a heartbeat sound of a baby in the womb to the intro. I found such a sound ,a 16 week old baby in the womb, and sent it to the producers. They nearly fell off their chairs because, astoundingly, the heartbreat tempo perfectly matched the tempo of the song. The chances of these matching up so precisely must be crazily small. It felt like a precious moment, and one of those times when you get a sense of God´s smile over you.

Many babies in the womb, even way more developed than this one, are aborted each year. Yet, here we have the sound of this little heartbeat , beating away, so full of life and potential. Perhaps one day our society might wake up to what we´re doing. And as Christians we´ll need to be part of the wake up call, speaking out truth and showing compassion alongside it. Sometimes worship and politics needs to mix.

The lovely end to this song story is that in September my wife gave birth to our little boy Rocco Benjamin Redman.' - Matt Redman
