New York, NY – April 2024 – Nashville based, Oregon born multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and producer Mat Kearney stirs up feelings of melancholy on his latest new single “Drowning in Nostalgia,” listen HERE. It’s the fifth song from Kearney’s new self-titled studio album to be released ahead of the LP, which is due out May 15th via Middle Kid Records. Ignited by his work with producer Mokita (David Guetta, Demi Lovato, Zac Brown Band), Kearney said the track came about “really fast.” The single is one of two that he did with Mokita for Mat Kearney and was written by Kearney, Mokita, and Trent Dabbs (Ingrid Michaelson, Kacey Musgraves, COIN) who also sings backing vocals on the track. “Drowning in Nostalgia” was produced by Mokita and Kearney and mixed by Grammy Award winning mix engineer Michael Brauer (John Mayer, Coldplay).
"It’s the most fictitious song on the record. I wanted to write a song that felt as if you were in the mountains of Montana. It's about the tension felt when getting to a place of fullness but you are your own worst enemy. The story of that song is how that applies in certain aspects of my own life. At the core, there’s a question of whether we’re writing our story or our story is writing us. Our history can sometimes feel too much to overcome and this song is sort of trying to understand that tension." – Mat Kearney
“Drowning in Nostalgia” follows the indie folk stunner “Sumac,” the captivating and buoyant single “Palisades,” the breezy road song “Headlights Home” and the feel good love song “Good Thing Going On.” For his first new album in more than three years Kearney took the reins on the production side. He produced or co-produced 10 of the 12 songs on the album, while working with Mokita, Micah Tawkls (Hayley Williams, Liza Anne, COIN), and Marc Scibilia (Breland, Robin Schultz, Teddy Swims) on the rest. In addition, he tapped The Brook and the Bluff – a group he’s a big fan of – to play as his backing band on several of the album’s tracks – a first for Kearney. He credits the sound and vibe of the album on this move, adding, “…these guys aren’t session players, they just have this feel together. And my favorite music is like that: people leaving space for each other, each one’s limitations complementing the other’s. And in a weird way it became like a democracy.”
Over his career, Kearney has released six studio LPs, claimed the #1 spot on iTunes, topped multiple Billboard charts, made four entries into the Hot 100, amassed over 592MM on demand streams and over 2.5 BILLION global streams. Kearney has performed live on The Today Show, Ellen, The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, and Jimmy Kimmel Live! and has garnered raves from USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, People, Billboard, PARADE, and Marie Claire. He also has an incredible touring history, sharing the road with everyone from John Mayer to NEEDTOBREATHE as well as headlining numerous tours of his own.
Kearney will hit the road in June for the start of a massive US headline tour that continues in August and through November.
