Fully-independent Christian pop/alternative artist, songwriter and producer Nathan Oswalt returns to releasing original music today with "SHADOWLANDS (2022 Demo)", available now on all streaming platforms. The Pacific Northwest native penned the heartfelt ballad during the last months of his grandmother’s life (September 2021-January 9, 2022), and began recording a rough demo version of the song just before her passing. With the assistance of Ian Manubens - Oswalt’s frequent collaborator during the early stages of his music career - the demo was finished just in time for the memorial service; though it was well-received by attendees, Oswalt ultimately chose to release another Manubens-assisted original tune, "OUTRUN", as his debut single in 2023.
Now 23 years old with a total of three released original songs under his belt, Oswalt explains his decision to finally unveil "SHADOWLANDS (2022 Demo)" almost three years after his beloved grandmother’s passing:
“Back then, I didn’t think that this song was refined or polished enough - musically or lyrically - for me to actually release it as a single. But over the last year or so, a whole lot of acquaintances, friends and family members of mine have experienced the deep grief of losing a loved one. Knowing that this demo track was still sitting around in storage on my computer, I realized that I had a profound opportunity to comfort and encourage them during their seasons of mourning, in a much more meaningful way than simply offering my condolences and sending them thoughts and prayers. I decided to translate my sympathy and compassion for all of them into action by taking the initial recording, re-mastering it using DistroKid’s free online mastering services, and then uploading it to its final resting place on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and other platforms. Now, ‘SHADOWLANDS’ - the very first song that I ever recorded - is out there for the whole world to hear. I hope that it resonates deeply with all who listen and reminds them that this broken existence is not all there is.”
On the song’s message, Oswalt shares, “In many ways, it’s my eulogy for Grandma set to music, but it’s also much more than that. It’s a very simple, very straightforward presentation of the power of the Gospel message that reveals the promise of eternal life for all who hear and embrace it. Jesus conquered the grave through His death and resurrection, and He invites us all to share in His victory, both in this life and in the next, by turning to Him in repentance and faith - as Grandma did, and as I also have. Because of Christ, those who are in Him can grieve with hope, and if anyone who hasn’t received Him yet as LORD and Savior somehow stumbles upon this song, then I pray that their eyes are opened, that their hearts are softened, and that they, too, as Jesus Himself articulates so powerfully in John 5:24, would come to saving faith in Him and ‘cross over from death to life’.”
"SHADOWLANDS (2022 Demo)" is the second single that Oswalt has released in 2024, arriving just over six months after his April 19 offering and most successful song to date, "WHO KNOWS". The latter track was recently added by DREAM Label Group to their official “Top Christian” and “Worship Songs” Spotify playlists, becoming Oswalt’s first-ever single to be recognized as a “Top Christian” track by any prominent Christian music organization. As of yesterday (October 24, 2024), "WHO KNOWS" has remained on both DREAM playlists for exactly one month.
In addition, fellow independent Christian artist Zane Walls has featured Oswalt’s 2023 debut single "OUTRUN" on his own “TOP CHRISTIAN MUSIC” Spotify playlist. Oswalt’s other 2023 original, "STILL GOOD", stands tall as his most-streamed song to date, with a combined total of 3,478 across Spotify and Apple Music. "OUTRUN" currently ranks second with 2,173 combined streams, while "WHO KNOWS" has tallied 1,709 so far. Oswalt launched a second wave of promotion for "WHO KNOWS" earlier this month, hoping to share the song and its uplifting message of resolute faith with a wider audience of listeners in the final weeks leading up to the United States Presidential election on November 5.

About Nathan Oswalt:
Fully-independent artist, songwriter, and producer Nathan Oswalt specializes in creating stadium-ready pop/rock/alternative anthems, mostly from his own home recording studio. A flawed but fervent follower of Jesus Christ, Oswalt's original compositions frequently feature faith-based themes and topics. The 23-year-old PNW native experienced unexpected success in 2024 with his third-ever single release, "WHO KNOWS". Just one day after its April 19 arrival, the track found a home on official playlists by several prominent organizations in the wider world of Christian music - including the Gospel Music Association (GMA New Music Friday), and Awakening Events (Fresh Music Friday). The latter group even shouted out Oswalt's work on Instagram - ahead of material from more established CCM acts such as Apollo LTD, KJ-52, JWLKRS Worship, Alexander Pappas, and even Phil Wickham. A few months later, "WHO KNOWS" was promoted by Dream Label Group on their Top Christian playlist, further establishing Oswalt as one of the genre's most exciting new faces. With his fourth single "SHADOWLANDS (2022 Demo)" out now on streaming platforms, more stand-alone songs planned for release in 2025, and a full-length debut album in development, Nathan Oswalt is gearing up to join the growing ranks of fully-independent talents taking the landscape of faith-based music by storm.
