The Chase

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 11 tracks: 39 minutes, 4 seconds
Street Date: March 30, 2010

So, if you haven't heard of Chris Greenwood of Ontario yet, then you have simply missed out on one of the hottest rap/rockers around throughout the past few years. Better known as Manafest, the multiple award winning artist has three previously released albums under his belt, all of which are very good. The Chase is his fourth installment, and fans will wonder how it stacks up to the rest.

The album opens with "No Plan B," setting the tone for the entire record. Manafest delivers a great mix of unique production coupled with a great rap/rock sound laid over hopeful soul-searching lyrics. It's easy to catch the influence of Trevor McNevan (Thousand Foot Krutch) throughout the album, especially since he's vocally featured on a handful of tracks. There are many good songs, such as "Fire In The Kitchen," "Bring The Ruckus," "Avalanche," and "Better Cause Of You," tracks that all feature God-fearing lyrics about staying strong for Christ laced with some tight beats.

Mana has also decided to take a few musical chances on The Chase. One of the best tracks would have to be "Every Time You Run," for its slower sound, display of the piano keys, and great message for everyone. "Breaking Down The Walls" is a really cool song where Chris shares his powerful testimony while the chorus, featuring Dustin Antsey, makes the track worshipful. Overall, this latest release isn't perfect, but it's also not too far from that goal either. The album has a little less rap, a little more rock, and a few more singing choruses than previous albums, and while that works rather well, it's not what I was expecting. All in all, the final product is very good and any fan of the rap/rock genre will definitely appreciate the sounds and message of Manafest.

JFH Staff's Second Opinion

In 2010, we now have Manafest's long awaited follow-up to Citizens Activ, The Chase. It's rare these days in a genre like this to find artists that show clear references towards their faith in God, and Chris makes it pretty obvious on this album. "Supernatural" is one of the highlights that is full of the same energy similar to P.O.D.'s "Going in Blind." Although rock and rap are used often throughout this album, "Avalanche" provides some techno into the mix that has a rhythm much like "Doctorin' the Tardis" by the Timelords in 1988. The song's lyrics express the plea for help from a prodigal. Many of the songs promote a positive attitude such as "Better Cause of You" and "Breaking Down the Walls." "The Chase" is a very quick marching style rap song that is very reminiscent of Linkin Park's "Bleed It Out." The only song from the album that becomes annoying is "Married in Vegas," although it has a great message concerning the importance of marriage. As for the rest of the project, The Chase is an enjoyable album with so much variety that it never seems to become tedious. Releases like this one don't come around too often, so if you crave rock and rap, it doesn't get better than this. - Wayne Myatt
