After signing to Tooth and Nail records, pop rock band Rocky Loves Emily presents its debut EP, American Dream. Very little new ground is explored musically, but Rock Loves Emily's polished sound definitely makes them a worthy competitor in the genre. In the end, American Dream is a more than satisfactory first release.
The sound of Rocky Loves Emily is immensely reminiscent of most mainstream pop rock artists. American Dream exhibits few attempts to put forth an original sound. However, one can expect catchy hooks, poppy choruses, and grin-worthy lyrics. It's a quick listen (each track clocks in at under three minutes), and the appealing opener, "American Dream," sets the standard that will follow through until the last note on the EP. Although each song has a somewhat similar sound, each song could also survive on its own.
Content wise, American Dream is not particularly deep. Instead, think of this EP as a fall release meant to remind one of summer. Rocky truly must be interested in Emily, since nearly every song on American Dream is about youthful relationships. "See You Again," "Name Of The Game" and "There's A Word For You" are delightfully narrative, in a way that many will be able to relate to on the surface.
All in all, American Dream is a solid effort for a debut EP. Although somewhat generic, their sound is nearly perfectly executed. The quickness of the record leaves one curious as to what more the band has to offer. If Rocky Loves Emily maintains the extreme catchiness found here and adds a more original or profound sound, the band's future is definitely bright.
