Since before BeatMart Recordings started, the record label has released a few mixtape-like albums. The first mixtape was released in old DJ Maj fashion, where you barely heard from the DJ as he chopped up each song, mixing them into each other for multiple tracks connected together. Each time it came to another track, the DJ would step in and scratch it up, introducing the next artist and his beat. Since then, DJ Maj has stepped out from behind the boards and grabbed the mic to show his skills. Similarly, DJ Morphiziz has taken over for BeatMart Recordings, scratching up each of the Best Of The Submissions mixtapes.
Originally, with the first Submissions mixtape, it was just like an original DJ Maj disc, who would fill his disc with well-known Christian hip hop artists. The difference with BeatMart was that they threw in a bunch of unsigned emcees that had sent in demos to the label, which shows a lot of trust and diversity in artists and emcees. Since that release, DJ Morphiziz has switched it up and the label has put exclusively unsigned emcees on the records. It shows off the talents of up-and-coming rappers and gives them some publicity. But is it worth a listen?
Best Of The Submissions: Volume 3 is by far one of the best albums to come from BeatMart Recordings this year. After the first few albums I've heard from them, I was leery to listen to this one, but I was glad that I did. Some of these unsigned emcees make me wonder why they really haven't been picked up anywhere yet. Highlights include the hard, beat-driven "Kick That," Spanish-laced track "No Cargo Metal," the innovative "What It Look Like," and the R&B flavored "Poundin' The Pavement."
The unsigned artists sounds and flows mimic many different mainstream secular rappers, ranging from Sean Paul to Jay-Z, and even to OutKast. Overall, this Submissions disc is worth picking up if you're looking for some new talent that will probably end up on the BeatMart label. The best thing about each of the Submissions albums is that they keep doing the contests and voting between each record, allowing one local artist to get their song onto the record. So get ready for Submissions 4, and get your songs in!
