READER RATING:

Plumb, aka Tiffany Lee, has now been in the music industry for over twenty years, which takes a tremendous amount of longevity. Her latest release, a sampling from her upcoming 2018 full-length album, titled God Help Me EP, is another great addition to her stellar career. With hit songs spanning various kinds of pop and rock styles--from Evanescence-type rock/pop, to dramatic ballads, children's lullabies, and modern pop--she's clearly proficient in a wide variety of styles. This, along with the fact she knows how to craft a great song, is a large reason for her staying power in a fickle music industry.

First song and title track leaves a good first impression for longtime fans with its piano-led beginning in the verse to its big live sounding drums in the chorus. Plumb shares vulnerably in these heartfelt lyrics, "And if I'm honest, there's quite a bit of fear/To sit here in this silence and really hear You/What will You ask of me?/Will I listen to Your voice when You speak?" Second track "Crazy About You" takes on the better parts of modern pop sounds as she sings from God's perspective that He's crazy about her and to, "take another chance on my love/no matter what you've done right/no matter what you've done wrong." In "I'm Not Alone," she reminds herself that, "I have nothing to fear/I'm not alone" to the swells of strings and soaring vocals until she ends in a whisper. "Acrobat" is the song that makes the most rock noise, and in my opinion, would make a great radio single for both CCM or mainstream radio. She laments the difficulty of balancing all that life throws at her with the statement, "I feel like an acrobat/gotta be strong, gotta be fast/gotta be this, gotta be that." Lastly, we hear "Fight for You," which is the most different in musicality of this set of songs, and for comparison sake, would fit the style of Plumb's contemporary, Francesca Battistelli, well. It follows a sugary "candy-coated" pop sound until ending with the playful plucks of a ukulele.

Overall, I found this EP a short but enjoyable listen that's easy to put on repeat. The messages of her lyrics are reassuring and encouraging without coming across too saccharine. Based on this group of songs, I certainly look forward to her 2018 release and recommend this EP for long-time fans, and fans of well-crafted pop music.

JFH Staff's Second Opinion

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of Plumb's self-titled debut, and the talented singer/songwriter has continued to evolve, creating album after album of memorable and meaningful pop/rock music ever since. Her new EP, God Help Me, serves as a sampler of her forthcoming 2018 full-length album. The sound and theme of these songs are a worthy follow-up to the catchy and emotional Need You Now, continuing the urgency of that album in a natural fashion. This generous helping of new songs--that avoid including obligatory remixes or acoustic versions to fill out the track list--does the job of getting us excited for more. Highlights include the relatable title track, the catchy "Crazy About You," and the rocker, "Acrobat." - Review date: 11/7/17, John DiBiase of Jesusfreakhideout.com
