Based out of Louisville, Kentucky, Iron Bell Music got their start in 2009 with a small home gathering. This simple beginning has birthed current worship nights, where hundreds meet at the Iron Bell Barn to experience the joy of worship together. God That Saves is their first offering born from these nights of spirit-led worship. What they share here is a set of songs best listened to in a quiet room with a hot beverage and a journal nearby. The prevailing feel is acoustic and intimate. The violins heard throughout serve to anchor each song in a chill, worshipful mood.
Lead song and title track "God That Saves" starts off giving praise for salvation from sin with lines like, "this soul once torn and beaten/left without reason to move on/then you reached down and brought me/up from the valley of dry bones." Another highlight is the piano based song, "Fall Away," and its call to let anything apart from Christ "fall away" from our lives. Also deserving attention as noteworthy songs are the passionate recalling of God's "Faithfulness" and the stomp clap-filled "Free in You."
However, the true standout song on the album is "Sons and Daughters," which contains the beautiful thoughts that the Father has about his children. The lyrics serve to remind believers how deeply He loves them with lines like, "you are my child and I am your Father/spend time with me my sons and daughters/I whisper I love you and it rings forever/drink of my love cause nothing is better." The chorus washes over the listener with the sentiment, "sons and daughters feel my pleasure/cause you are my treasure/daughters and sons you've been ransomed/new life has begun." The bridge of the song drives home the unfathomable thought that "I sought you/you were lost/you were worth the cost."
God That Saves is an excellent album that has a laser focus from start to finish on their self-described mission to "cultivate a heart of adoration." This album does that in spades. This focus, combined with the Jesus-centered lyrics, serve to make it a refreshing change of pace from the common smoke, lights and bombast typical of the genre. Worthy of multiple listens, God That Saves is a among the top worship releases of 2017 so far.
