JFH Music Review

Starfield
I Will Go

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 10 tracks: 45 minutes, 59 seconds
Street Date: March 25, 2008

The Canadian quartet who takes their name from a Bruce Cockburn song, Starfield, has progressively found more success with each record released since their U.S. debut in 2004. Now with their third offering, Starfield brings us a rock/modern worship collection, falling in the same vein as their previous releases, titled I Will Go.

The record starts off strong with the first verse of "From the Corners of the Earth." The mood of that introduction creates a solid feeling of anticipation. The chorus does little to continue that building and doesn't particularly fulfill the anticipation created early on.

The title track, "I Will Go," is a rockin' number that talks about what our response should be to the broken, hurting, and poor of the world. Lyrically, the song makes you want to jump up and set out to fulfill God's call on all of our lives. Musically, the song is complimented by its immediate successor, "Holy is Our God." The whole song escalates to a big, victorious final chorus and then, for some reason, gradually backs off to nothing again.

Vocalist Tim Neufield does a good job singing the typical style, but it's always nice when singers try new things. There are several points in the album where you just find yourself wishing he'd put some strained emotion in his voice to really help you to feel what he's feeling. Neufield's voice isn't particularly distinguishable as it is.

This idea of trying new things is something that would have helped this album out greatly. While there are some strong songs that will surely find radio play, there isn't an awful lot that you're going to remember. So much of the radio airwaves and CD racks are filled with comparable artists with comparably unoriginal sounds that I Will Go isn't likely to stand out from the crowd.

Overall, I Will Go is a solid modern worship record. If you're looking for a good worship experience while driving to work or doing chores, you'll probably find enough here to meet your needs. However, if you're looking for something to help you engage God in new and exciting ways, you'll need to keep looking.
