Recently signed to Essential Records, Hawaiian-bred Olivia the Band is a typical pop/punk band with little substance. Although the band formed in 1995, its self-titled debut lacks lyrical as well as musical maturity, leaving listeners asking the question, "So what?"
The first song, "Stars and Stripes," has a repetitive chorus with forgettable lyrics and unfortunately sets the pace for the entire album. There is little to distinguish one song from another. The vocals sound unpolished and lack passion. Musically, there is nothing to set the album apart from the multitude of pop/punk projects that have already been released.
One positive is that the band does not hide its faith. Songs like, "Heaven," and "Look to the Stars," clearly portray the band's faith in Christ. However, the lyrics lack creativity and depth.
The self-titled debut from Olivia the Band is shallow and unoriginal. The vocals are annoying at times and most of the songs just sound too much the same.
