Seventh Day Slumber has been around for nearly a decade playing a throwback version of grunge rock with lyrics drenched in hope in the darkness. In late 2004, they signed with BEC Recordings, and their fourth album, Once Upon a Shattered Life is ready for release. Does it pick up where Picking Up the Pieces left off?
Once upon a Shattered is a much more pop/rock oriented venture than previous Seventh Day Slumber. It is somewhat reminiscent of Jeremy Camp, yet very much like John Elephante from years ago. For the most part, they keep to a more melodic pop/rock sound, but occasionally up the ante and bring heavy guitar licks into the mix.
Lyrically is where Seventh Day Slumber has experienced the littlest change. But anyone familiar with the band knows that this is no imperfection. Seventh Day has always been known for their "in your face" lyrics about life's tougher subjects. Pain, suicide, and suffering have all been covered in extreme detail many times over. But hope is not just presented, it is practically preached. This overshadowing theme has not been forgotten on Once Upon a Shattered Life.
Definitely different than previous efforts, but still an excellent piece of work. Seventh Day Slumber continues to stand out not exactly for their musical talents (though that's a part of it), but for the overall quality of the band. Passionate lyrics keep this one flowing and the music is a perfect compliment. It's hard not to like Once Upon a Shattered Life.
