Ginny Owens
Something More

Artist Info: Discography
Album length: 12 tracks: 41 minutes, 47 seconds
Street Date: March 19, 2002

When I first heard "I Am" on the radio, I turned it up. Attracted to the fun pop sound, I knew immediately I had to get Ginny Owens' second album, Something More. And what I heard really delighted me.

Right from the start, you can tell Owens is all about using her light pop sound to tell stories. Opening with the short, aptly titled "Prelude", Something More starts off in the right direction. "Prelude" is an opener for the radio favorite "With Me", an upbeat, R&B track. "Run To You" sounds like traditional Ginny Owens material, and even carries the same tone as "This Road", a song that appears a little later in the album.

The chart-topper "I Am" showcases three Biblical figures (Moses, David, and Mary), and focuses on the fact that God is in control even when we don't understand or see the bigger picture. The title track, "Something More", follows, and tends to become a bit monotonous when the chorus comes along. A major theme running along the threads of Ginny's debut album, Without Condition, finds its way onto this record as well. "This Road" reminds the listener that God is always with us, even when this road of life seems long and hard. Soft-spoken and encouraging, "This Road" may even bring a tear to the driest eye. "I Know Someone" picks things up where "I Am" left off with more of that pop feel.

Ginny Owens admitted after touring for an extended period of time to promote her debut record that she wanted to return to the simple things for her second offering. "Simply Love You" fits the bill pretty well bringing us back to the simple message of loving Jesus. Another story, "The Hand" is a little moody at points for Ginny's light pop sound, but does well, almost having the same feel as "Something More". "True Story" is a great reminder of being humble with our lives. Leading out with gentle guitar, the track picks up once we hit the chorus and tones down again for verse two.

The final two tracks bring more of the simplicity Owens has been looking for on this record. "All I Want To Do" is a simple plea for the Lord to take her life and bring it in tune with His will. Piano provides the backdrop for this soft ballad. The ending song, "Be Still, My Soul", is an old hymn that fits Ginny's voice snugly, employing the use of a wide variety of stringed instruments to accompany.

Something More is a worthy offering from singer/songwriter Ginny Owens. Her desire for seeing Jesus glorified through her life is evident with each track on the album, and will definitely spread to the listener.
