In the two years that Beatmart Recordings has existed, producer Todd Collins has been in search of pioneering rap artists, and the search has brought to light a few promising acts, such as Bobby Bishop and Japhia Life. But the search has also brought some artists that need more experience, like Fresh Digress. So when I heard that Collins himself considered Soul P. to be the pioneer for the record label, I had to check him out.

Soul P.'s major label debut is definitely by far one of the best releases to come from the record label. The rapper has a sound and style reminiscent of secular rap icon Chingy, but with a much better and more meaningful message to portray to his audience. One of the standouts on the record, "Step Clap," is a catchy beat-driven song that just begs for radio play. Another catchy track is the album opener, after an introduction from Todd Collins himself, "I'm Here," which really sets the mood for the entire record that Soul P. is here to stay. The lead single "Whoa Whoa" is also a highlight and offers a real laid back beat, but Soul keeps his lyrics tight and to the point. He also incorporates some R&B and soul flavor into his songs as well, which is slightly evidenced on the catchy "Goodness," and more so on "You Make Me" and "Hold On." P. even throws in piano on a few songs, which works very well with the gangster flavored "I'm The Street" and the album closer "All I Want."

Debut albums are usually a make or break situation for artists, especially in Soul P's position, where his first record is on both a mainstream label and a Christian label. However, Soul has pulled it off rather well, and it looks like this album could go pretty far. This is an impressive release from Beatmart, and I look forward to what they can offer in the future.
