The holidays are in full-swing! If you haven't seen any Christmas releases yet, it is merely out of sheer willpower to not begin the holiday season until Thanksgiving. As one among many is the latest Kim Walker-Smith holiday themed album, When Christmas Comes. While many artists may treat all Christmas tunes with a more traditional approach, Walker-Smith gives listeners a blend of traditional and modern interpretations. Songs like "Silent Night," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Away in a Manger" and "O Come O Come Emmanuel" are given contemporary treatments that may provide worship leaders with a different way to celebrate the season with their congregations. For those who enjoy the light-hearted songs of Christmas and desire a more traditional sound, "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "The Christmas Song" will meet your needs.
The album is, overall, a very good compilation or sacred and traditional, but some may find that Walker-Smith's vocals don't tend to match the sound of the music. The songs that feature a little more restraint from the vocalist tend to be the stronger tracks. While it's definitely a good--and very large--album, it may garner a mixed response. Nevertheless, it's wonderful to see artists who one might not expect to make a Christmas album, embrace the spirit of the season.
