This album released a few months before I came on staff at JFH, so I'm pretty pumped that I finally get a chance to write about it. This was easily one of my favorite releases of 2016, Christian or not, and that's coming from someone who was never really sold on this band prior to A Mirror Dimly. In my opinion, this album perfectly married the rock of the band's earlier work with the synth-pop leanings of Join the Triumph, resulting in a worship record that's warm and real and a little rough around the edges. Musically, it sounds like this album was recorded live in a room, and spiritually, it sounds like a ragged and weary bunch of guys who have seriously learned how to lean on Jesus, as one song puts it, "Day By Day." I've always thought "Crown Him" was an odd way to open this album, but by the time you reach the closing pair, the epic "My Joy Is Complete" and the Springsteen-esque "Doubting Doubts," Citizens & Saints have taken you on a journey. Now back down to their original band name, Citizens, and on Humble Beast Records, I'm eager to discover what's next for these kids, (or as they say, "kids of grace").
