Ah,
Galaxy Quest. This one was a pleasant surprise. I grew up watching
Star Trek: The Next Generation (and the occasional original series episodes and feature movies) with my brother and my dad, so
Galaxy Quest's thoughtful spoof take on
Star Trek was an absolute delight. Director Dean Parisot gave the movie a serious enough tone that it didn't feel like one of those cheap spoof attempts (like the
Scary Movie franchise, for example), and it actually stands on its own really, really well. It's still fun to revisit over 20 years later!
"It's the simple things in life you treasure."
Honorable Mentions: The Mummy. This was the hardest so far to pick between.
The Mummy has such a bizarre and unique mix of horror and comedy, with an incredible score from Jerry Goldsmith and great performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. I think the only reason why
Galaxy Quest wins out is how rough the content for
The Mummy is - especially for a PG-13 movie. Plus
Galaxy Quest just holds up a little bit better with its special effects, too. And then there's
Toy Story 2, which is another fantastic 1999 movie... 1999 was a great year for movies!
