DJ Maj has been doing mixtapes pretty much since Gotee Records was first created by co-CEO Toby McKeehan. In the past three mixtapes, we didn't get a real good chance to hear him sing, rap, or do much of anything other than be the turntablist for each mixtape, linking each song together with a shout out to the artist being featured. But on BoogiRoot, Maj has stepped out from behind the tables to take a hold of the microphone and make himself known. He's even dropped the term "mixtape" from the title of the album. But does this experimentation work?
Not even a minute into the album shows that Maj can flow with one of his own beats. He is a very talented rapper, and it's good to see that he's not ashamed to come out and tell about himself and the things he's been through. Fans of tobyMac's Welcome To Diverse City record will definitely find things to like here. Maj keeps each track very diverse, yet still keeping the mixtape feel to the album. All but two of the songs on BoogiRoot feature exclusive artist collaboration, including artists such as tobyMac, Liquid, KJ-52, and Michael Tait, who also acts as the narrator for the album, as in the first track, "Rated R" (for "religious").
Notable tracks begin with "H.A.N.D.S." featuring Michael Tait, which offers a heavy rock beat, keeping in the same vein as Tait's rock roots. "Up All Nite" features the entire crew from LA Symphony, which continues the soul/funk/hip-hop vibe the group is known for, while "UAppeal" features manChild of Mars Ill and Special Ed, which shows off some of Maj's best skills as a rapper. Another highlight is "Through The Night," featuring KJ-52. Incorporating piano notes with the beat, it makes for a unique, standout track.
Honestly, I can't find a thing wrong with BoogiRoot. With fourteen tracks of pure hip-hop and R&B, it's an amazing step up for DJ Maj as he shows that he can do more than just stand behind a turntable and mix up the beat. Maj has proved he can rock the mic and rap along with the best of them. And the best part of BoogiRoot? Maj keeps Christ first in every single one of his raps. Keep up the great work Maj!
