I always thought Dead Poetic had something special. Their first two albums had some haunting melodies and introspective lyrics that drew me in, but the screaming, at least for me, was distracting. They didn't seem to know who they wanted to be - somber and contemplative or raw and angry. Then came Vices, where everything - songwriting, singing, lyrics, and instrumentation - combined to make an amazing album. Anger and sadness grow out of one another, so that the resignation of "In Coma" seems like the result of the frustration in "Narcotic." Unlike Dead Poetic's previous material, I didn't feel like they were trying to get the melancholy out of the way in order to reach their screaming quota. Also, Vices has the best payoff ever as these negative emotions give way to hope in the final line: "Oh my Jesus, I've got vices like any other man, vices that You're so used to, vices that won't make You think less of me."
