With a lot of punk, a pinch of hardcore, and a dash of ska, the Hostetter siblings roared into the already-crowded 2008 Christian rock scene with a sound of their own. Their self-titled debut album boasts intense vocals, driving guitars, and skilled bass work from Dave and Lee Marie, meaty drum beats from Seth, and a high energy tracklist which only slows down for the short interlude “Samantha” (I echo JFH editor John DiBiase, who wrote in his second opinion that this song was “sinfully short”). The thought-provoking and slightly cryptic lyrics enhance the album and add more substance behind the sound. Frenetic opener “All My Balloons,” the chaotic yet catchy “Homemade Valentine,” and the epic closer “Final” are all must-hear tracks for anyone who hasn’t listened to Children 18:3 before. While the band went on to release three more solid albums, they never matched the raw grit and purposeful pandemonium of their first LP.
