You Are My Sunshine

Copeland began as emo darlings with their breakout record, Beneath Medicine Tree, but with each subsequent record, the band slowly started to dip their feet deeper and deeper into more experimental waters. Their sound began reaching for different textures and tones, and when it came time to release their fourth studio record, they had become barely recognizable. To this day, I cite Copeland as a prime example of a band changing their sound for the better, because You Are My Sunshine is a melancholic beauty that only continues to reward with age. The vocals are more delicate, the music more soulful and pensive, and the execution more ambitious. "Not So Tough Found Out" is quite possibly the band's greatest achievement, but cuts like "Chin Up," "Strange and Unprepared," and "On the Safest Ledge" are simply irresistible.
