Lackluster by Aaron Sprinkle was anything but what its title might suggest. This major label debut by former Poor Old Lu guitarist (and in-house Tooth & Nail producer) played like a greatest hits album from an artist you thought was new. Culling the best of his emotional folk-pop outings from his indie album days, and adding a few new tunes to the mix, Sprinkle gave the world fourteen soundtrack-worthy songs in the vein of Elliot Smith or fellow Northwest folkie band Fleet Foxes. Opener "Really Something" and devastating closer "A Friend I Had" bookend a fantastic group of soul-bearing, tuneful songs from a songwriter that seemingly came out of nowhere. Good job Tooth & Nail for getting this unsung artist out into the spotlight. (Follow-up album Water & Guns is magnificent too.)
