#5. Family Force 5
Time Stands Still
Release Date: August 5, 2014
|
The lead singer swap is always a tricky thing. We're currently in a time in the industry where more than just a few significant bands have done it (Flyleaf, Audio Adrenaline, Newsboys, Hawk Nelson, to name a few). This time, part-time vocalist and full-time drummer Jacob Olds has stepped into the full-time vocalist role after the departure of his brother Solomon. With a new home label at Word Records and a renewed vision for the band, Family Force 5 still is an exciting entity. And, hey, those new songs they've been playing live since Jacob stepped up the mic are as fun as ever.

This band is so unpredictable that they're a staple on our Highlighting lists. Successfully redeeming themselves of III with The Third, they shook things up even more with Soul Glow Activatur's exit. I'm not sure what to expect on Time Stands Still, honestly; "BZRK" seems like business as usual, but "Let It Be Love" is uncharacteristically CCM radio-esque. We'll see what happens this August.

The excitement surrounding Time Stands Still is double-edged. While the fact that it is a FF5 release is enough to get people excited, the fact that they are now signed to Word Records makes me a bit wary. Adding a new lead vocalist to the mix (former drummer Jacob "Crouton" Olds) even further surrounds this album with both anticipation and uncertainty.

I'm super curious to see what FF5 will do without Soul Glow Activatur at the helm. Even more interesting is their signing to the CCM-dominated Word Records. Perhaps FF5 will be offering up something new and completely unexpected.

Despite the departure of the band's longtime lead singer, Solomon 'Soul Glow Activator' Olds, there's a lot of reasons to be excited about the group's upcoming release. Since one of the conditions of Olds' exit was his promise to stay heavily involved behind the scenes, it's unlikely a lot has changed. And if the band's latest party stopper, 'BZRK (feat. KB)', is any indication, the band hasn't missed a beat. You won't want to either.
